Beat started in 2006. Late one night, first chill of winter, raining. It seemed like a good time to begin.

It has been going in various forms since then — sometimes regularly, mostly not. There have been gaps you could drive a truck through. But it keeps coming back, which probably says something.

The name is about music, mostly. Upbeats and downbeats. The rhythm of things. Also journalism, which is where a fair bit of the writing instinct comes from.

Over the years this site has covered music, media, books, the odd recipe, Movember, bad luck, things spotted from a car window at 6am, and whatever else seemed worth a paragraph or two. That hasn't changed much.
